So, for almost a week now I have been sick. Sick enough to miss my last two church services (Sunday morning and Wednesday night). In general, miserable. I hate being sick. Makes me feel useless. So, anyway, this evening I am reading a short devotional and the author is talking about different aspects of the Belt of Truth. Tonight was about acceptance, security, and worth.
We are accepted by God as adopted children. More than just children though sons. In ancient times sons had more value placed on them than daughters, for different reasons.
So we are accepted by God, we have worth as 'sons', and we have security in him, through (and this is actually the part that stood out to me) our elder brother, Jesus... I have heard the phrase adopted as brothers, but it never hit me like this phrasing.
I have a younger sister. And she has had children so I have a few nieces. My cousins growing up were either in the same age as me, or younger. The few that were older were in another state and not really role model material. So, I have never had that older sibling, older cousin to look up to. Tonight I realized I do! And what a role model!
So, I ask. Do you know my big brother? He's a pretty special guy. If not...Let me tell you about him sometime. He wants to be your brother too..!

Oh my gosh that is amazing! Now that I have had a chance to sit and process this, I am starting to realize more. We're in a series at church about the person of the Holy Spirit and it's interesting to see this perspective. For me it's like our Heavenly Father is the father, Jesus is our brother, and the Holy Spirit is our friend and husband. For me, he stepped in and filled in the gaps when my marriage was all wrong and he acted as my husband. To see Jesus as a brother is awesome because he experienced the world and chose Gods way. And yes, he did fight temptations too, but with the Holy Spirit guiding he overcame and if my brother through the Spirits power can overcome, so can I.
